It's 2016. 2016 means another year, another birthday, new year, same me. It's been a rough start, not going to lie. Week 1 was filled with rejected insurance claims and harried phone calls to school financial aid offices, with my panicked queries, wondering why yet another one of my 6k student loans had been unexpectedly withdrawn. Week 1 was packed with either clueless or rude administrators, hanging up on me after added demands that I immediately backpay a loan amount given to me last semester. And more. Week 1 was rife with sore fingers literally bleeding under the nails, after hours of prying away alginate from stone in the laboratory, again and again. Never good enough. And lastly, Week 1 was overrun with misinformation and miscommunication, with sudden class schedule changes unbeknownst to us until after the fact, with poor grades and with, forever and always, antisocial tendencies. Hello, 2016.

Then again,  Weekend 1 also happened. Weekend 1 was filled with this.
Blistered Shishito Pepper; Bar Ferdinand
Margret Duck Breast with Brown Butter, Cherries, and Pistachios; Bar Ferdinand
Spanish Cheeses and House-Cured Charcuterie; Bar Ferdinand
Lychee Lassi; Mood Cafe
Banh Mi Hoagie (Pork and Pate, Chargrilled Pork); Fuh Wah Market

So, yes, Week 1 sucked. But, Weekend 1 was filled with productivity and happiness and peace. Pinky came to see me for a night and a bit of day, in advance of my upcoming birthday, which falls on a particularly horrendously long day of classes and work. Although I only captured a few photos of a few of the things we ate, I hope it gives you a brief review of our adventures and how lovely most of these places were. We did in fact visit Northern Liberties again and grab many a snack and drink at various locations, including Standard Tap, but also in the list were the Coffee Market and Pat and Geno's (for cheesesteaks), all good places. It is of note, though, that the photos above show the highlights - I now have strongly happy associations with Fu Wah's Banh Mis, and I'm definitely going back to Mood Cafe to get more lassis and chaat. And lastly, Pinky also brought the best gifts I could ever ask for. Some new furniture and glassware, and a quick stop at the Chinese grocery. How is is this man so good?

More importantly though, what made this weekend so wonderful is that, for the first time in a long while, I felt human again. Felt allowed to be my true self. And there was time spent together without any pressure. No major plans other than being ourselves and enjoying each other's company. It's unfortunate that the time was so short.

I am sad that he has gone. The world and Philadelphia seem a much bleaker place. And yet, it's ridiculous how love can make things seem so much more doable. So come at me, 2016. I've got some love on my side. I'll take you as you come.
